Land Acknowledgment
Sonoma Forest Sanctuary's history is deeply rooted in the Northern California ecosystem, predating the colonization of the western frontier. It was once home to the Kishaya Pomo Native Americans, and we hold deep respect for their stewardship of the land in Cazadero and its surroundings over many generations. We also acknowledge the historical injustices they endured, as they were displaced from their ancestral lands.
In alignment with the beliefs of the Kishaya Pomo people, we recognize the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world. We share the conviction that there is no distinction between people and the environment; we are inseparable, both originating from the earth and returning to it.
The land exudes a profound and healing energy, not only at Sonoma Forest Sanctuary but also throughout the Russian River Valley. It resonates in the trees, the rocks, and the wise grandmother oak that watches over us from the ridge. We are steadfast in our commitment to amplify the voices of the Kashaya Pomo community, who now reside on a reservation near Fort Greene. We engage with their elders to have meaningful conversations and discussions about various important topics, fostering a connection that transcends time and honors the shared spirit of the land.
A few years ago, the owner of Sonoma Forest Sanctuary founded Teravana , a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering deep connections with nature. The land serves as both a wedding venue and a retreat center, while Teravana focuses on promoting education, healing, and emotional growth. Among our various programs, we proudly provide fresh, locally grown food and vegetables to the Cazadero community, enriching both the land and the lives of those we serve.
